Proverbs 14:13 explores the hidden emotional weight people carry beneath outward appearances. The verse recognizes that joy and sorrow often coexist and laughter can become a mask concealing grief, loneliness, anxiety, or depression. This painting was inspired by a close friendship with a woman, whose outward composure often concealed deep emotional pain. Though others around her seemed unaware of her struggles, I came to recognize the heaviness she carried through the conversations we shared. During this period of friendship, I was beginning my relationship with Christ and learning from Scripture, especially the wisdom literature of Proverbs and the teachings of Jesus. Those influences shaped the way I approached our friendship and the guidance I attempted to offer her. The original version of this piece was titled Romans 7:15, focusing on internal struggle and destructive behaviors people repeat despite knowing they are harmful. However, after our friendship ended suddenly, the emotional meaning of the painting changed. The revised title, Proverbs 14:13, reflects both her hidden grief and my own sadness after losing the friendship. The artwork became less about behavior and more about emotional truth; the reality that pain often remains hidden beneath ordinary interactions and temporary happiness. The image serves as both portrait and confession, portraying the quiet sorrow that lingers when relationships fade, distractions disappear, and people are left alone with their thoughts. Ultimately, the verse and painting point toward compassion: the recognition that many people silently carry burdens invisible to the world around them.
Small symbolic elements throughout the piece reinforce its themes of memory, loss, and emotional concealment. The subdued expression and softened atmosphere create a feeling of emotional distance rather than overt tragedy. The piece intentionally avoids dramatic gestures, choosing instead to portray sadness with restraint, mirroring how depression and anxiety often remain unnoticed. The evolution of the title itself reflects the emotional transformation behind the work, from focusing on inner conflict to focusing on hidden grief. Much of the emotional tone came from the real conversations we shared about faith, purpose, and suffering. The artwork also quietly documents my own spiritual growth during that time, showing how Scripture shaped the way I understood human pain. Though rooted in personal experience, the painting aims to speak universally about how people suffer privately while appearing outwardly fine.
